Network Rail - Identifying training needs of 2000 project professionals
Determining the training needs of this large group of project professionals spread across ten project families at three levels of seniority required a robust and efficient survey of a representative sample.
The Challenge
Network Rail recognised that its projects and programmes undertaken to enhance the network are becoming ever more complex, requiring the management of multiple sub-projects across the asset groups. It was judged time to identify enhancements to the existing development programme for 2,000 project professionals required to meet these new challenges. A comprehensive survey of a representative sample of project professionals was required.
The Solution
Working as the major contributor in a team of specialist consultants, Provek deployed its leading PMA5 on-line assessment tool to over 250 individuals to evaluate their technical knowledge, experience and a self evaluation of contextual competences. The knowledge and experience survey was compared to Provek’s database of thousands of other project professionals from outside Network Rail. The results of the on-line contextual competence evaluation were validated by six interviews from a representative cross section.
The Benefits
The results identified the specific strengths and areas for development of the different project job families (e.g. project planning, project management and programme management) and different levels of seniority. Priorities for training and development were accurately identified enabling scarce funds to be targeted on the right topics for the right people. Further deployment of PMA5 was commissioned by Network Rail.
