MOD - Accrediting project managers
Implementing a professional accreditation process at three levels of project manager required a credible, reputable and secure assessment process.
The Challenge
In 2006 the MoD (Defence Equipment and Support) launched a licensing scheme to accredit and increase the numbers of professional staff undertaking structured development in project management. An online assessment approach was required to support the decision to grant an interim licence at one of three levels, aligned to the Association for Project Management (APM) qualification structure, and to advise on a project management development options.
The Solution
A highly tailored version of Provek’s PMA5 was developed for the MoD which determines the levels of project management experience, knowledge, situational decision ability, and personality indicators. The three-page report, provided to each individual, presents the results of their assessment benchmarked against industry norms and mapped to the six areas of the MoD’s own project management functional competence framework. Recommendations are made in the report to the individual’s suitability to take the APMP or APM PQ qualification which Provek has provided, as well as their development need against existing project management development solutions.
Provek has also supported a group of project managers through all three stages of the APM Certificated Project Manager qualification as part of a pilot exercise to develop the criteria for a Level 3 licence.
The Benefits
The individual is made aware of their own strengths and weaknesses while being given guidance on the available and suitable development options. There were also fewer failed and disappointed candidates taking the APMP and APM PQ qualifications as all potential candidates had to meet strict levels of experience, knowledge and decision making ability. The organisation achieved more influence and control as well as better value for money on qualification course costs.
